Between January and March of 2006, KRC conducted Computer Classes for 21 seniors (65 years or older) as an extension of last year’s computer classes. The classes focused on basic everyday usages of the internet—web surfing, emails and discussion forums. Classes became popular among our students and many are eager to get started on the next class. Our instructor, Taiyoung Ko, has returned to South Korea, so the classes are postponed until KRC finds a new instructor.

Between January 1st and April 30th of 2006, KRC has assisted a total of 449 individuals through its Social Services program. Most frequent cases were Welfare related, with 141 cases.
This includes 81 cases on SSI and SSA, as well as CAPI, Food Stamps, CalWORKS and others. Next, there were 75 cases on Low-Income Housing. Currently, Ok Sook Yoon, Young Jo Chung are serving as active volunteers for the Social Service program.

In 2006, KRC served 248 households through the cost-free Volunteer Individual Tax Assistance program. Most clients are low income and recent immigrant families. KRC also held Tax Payer's Seminars and distributed KRC-produced Income Tax Information. We thank our volunteers, Jong Hyun Kim, Hyun Sook Kim, Seung Hwan Yeom, Il Han Lee, Hong B. Chang and Kyung Hwa Han, who worked for the free tax clinic.

Poet Chi Ha Kim and his wife, Young Joo Kim visited KRC on April 4th. He is a South Korean democratization movement veteran since the 1970’s and is currently developing a “Life Spirit School of Thought” (SaengMyung), rooted in the historic DongHak peasant movement ideology.

The Health Access Project (HAP) at the Korean Resource Center seeks to improve the health status among people of color with an emphasis on Korean-Americans, foster a belief that health care should be incorporated into our daily lives and ensure Korean-American representation in health policy and funding, and education of our community in health issues.

In 2005, House Judiciary Chair James Sensenbrenner introduced and passed two extremely harsh anti-immigrant bills. In January, the REAL ID Act, now law, denied undocumented immigrants access to drivers’ licenses. The year ended with the passage of H.R.

During this critical moment in our community, KRC has created a place for young people to discuss immigrant and civil rights issues, develop their leadership, and redefine their identity as Korean Americans through education, the arts, and culture.
