APIAVOTE CALLS FOR SUPREME COURT TO STRIKE DOWN INDIANA VOTER ID LEGISLATION

WASHINGTON, DC – Today leaders of the Asian & Pacific Islander American Vote (APIAVote), a non-partisan non-profit civic engagement organization, addressed the United States Supreme Court's consideration of an Indiana law that requires voters to present photo identification at the polls.

Raising awareness for the DREAM Act and gathering $1,000 for the DREAM Scholarship Fund, FYSH in Chicago organized a successful first time marathon. On Sept. 22, Just weeks before the Senate eventually decided to table a motion to attach the DREAM Act as an amendment, more than 100 DREAM supporters throughout Illinois ran 2.5 miles In downtown Chicago. At the end, runners signed postcards and released balloons into the air symbolizing the hopes and aspirations of thousands of undocumented immigrant students.

11월 13일, 사회보장국 대변인 마크 힌클 (Mark Hinkle) 는 2006년 세금정보를 바탕으로 한 불일치 편지를 올 2007년에 보내지 않을 것이라고 발표했다. 사회보장국은 임금 보고 수정을 목표로 하는 불일치편지 프로그램을 내년 3월이나 4월에 시작하게 될 것이라고 전망하고 있다.

대변인 힌클은 사회보장국의 이번 결정은 지난 8월 말에 시작된 전국산별노조연합 (AFL-CIO)과 미 시민자유연대 (ACLU)가 국토보안부를 상대로 낸 불일치편지의 이민단속 수단을 허락하는 법안을 취소하라는 내용의 소송의 결과라고 설명했다. 8월 말에 시작된 이 소송은, 원고측과 여러 이민자 권익단체 그리고 시민권리단체의 노력으로 마침내 10월 10일 연방 판사의 임시발효정지를 얻어내었고, 사회보장국의 불일치 편지 발효정지는 여전히 그 효력을 가지고 있다.

On November 13, 2007, Social Security Administration ("SSA") spokesperson, Mark Hinkle, announced that SSA will not issue no-match letters to employers this year based on the 2006 tax year information. SSA will resume the program in March or April of 2008.
