My name is Su Yon Yi. I have been living in the U.S. for a very long time. My parents came in the late seventies, I was about three and my brother was one year old.
The major reason they decided to come was to be with their family and also in Korea they had heard these fascinating stories about what America was like. My mom told me that she actually believed that the streets were paved with gold, and she was shocked to see they were made of cement. (laugh)
They wanted to have more opoportunities for my brother and I because back there my parents were farmers and we were traveling from place to place in search of work. In America, they thought they would have more economic opportunities and my brother and I would have more opportunities to go to college.
When I was about eleven years old, they decided to move to California, because there weren't very many colleges, they wanted to start their own business, and they decided to do it at California.
My mom told me this really funny story, that if you live in close proximity to a prestigious college, our chances would be better (laugh) of going there, so we moved to Northern California.
My brother and I have been both able to go to college, my brother is now a professional golf player, which I don't think would have been possible had we stayed in Korea, and for me, I am planning to go back to law school, which I think is the fullfillment of my family's dream of coming to America.

제 이름은 이수연입니다. 제 부모님은 70년대 말 미국으로 오셨고 당시 저는 세 살이었고 제 동생은 한 살이었습니다.
저희 가족이 미국으로 오게 된 가장 큰 이유는 가족과 함께 있기 위함이었고 또 한국에 있을 당시 미국에 대한 흥미로운 소문을 많이 들었기 때문입니다. 예를 들어 저희 어머님은 미국은 도로가 황금으로 포장되어 있다고 굳게 믿고 있었고 정작 여기에 와서 도로에 시멘트가 발라져 있는 것을 보곤 깜짝 놀라셨다고 합니다. (웃음)
저희 부모님은 저와 제 동생에게 더 많은 기회를 주려고 했습니다. 한국에 살 때 저희 부모님은 농민 이였고 일자리를 찾아 자주 이동하곤 했습니다. 미국에서 경제적 기회를 도 많이 얻을 수 있다고 생각했고 제 동생과 저는 대학을 다닐 기회가 더 크다고 생각했지요.
제가 열 한살이 되었을 때 저희 가족은 저희 가족은 캘리포니아로 이사했습니다. 당시 살던 지역에는 대학이 많지 않았고, 또한 부모님은 자영업을 시작하고 싶어했기 때문에 캘리포니아에서 시작하는 것이 좋으리라 판단하셔서 이런 결정을 하게 되었습니다.
저희 어머님은 제게 한번 아주 재미있는 이야기를 해주신 적이 있는데요, 좋은 대학 인근에 자리를 잡고 살면 그 대학에 입학할 확률이 높아진대요 (웃음) 그래서 북가주로 옮기게 되었습니다.
그 후 제 동생과 저는 둘 다 대학을 가게 되었습니다. 제 동생은 프로 골퍼인데 한국에서 이런 기회를 갖기란 쉽지 않습니다. 저는 법대에 들어갈 준비를 하고 있습니다. 이것은 바로 미국에 올 때 저희 가족이 꿈꾸던 것이라 생각합니다.
