저는 10살 때 한국에서 이민와서 라티노 동네에서 자라났습니다. 저는 그들의 언어와 문화를 배우며 이민자들이 일자리에서 겪는 어려움들을 직접 보게 되었습니다.
저는 이 행진에 참여해 후손들에게, 자녀들에게, 우리 커뮤니티에 더 나은 사회를 물려주려고 합니다. 저는 사회가 변할 수 있다는 것을 믿습니다. 사람이 일을 하면 정당한 보수를 받아야 합니다. 일을 잘 하면 보수를 그에 상응하게 받아야 하구요. 그렇지 않습니까? 이것은 노동자에 대한 존중의 문제입니다. 중산층 가정이 늘어날수록 우리 커뮤니티는 더 살기 좋은 사회가 됩니다.
저는 좋은 직장을 가지고 있기 때문에 은퇴 이후 현재 수준의 삶의 질을 유지 할 것으로 내다보고 있습니다. 노조의 보호가 없는 노동자는 은퇴 후 수입이 줄어 더 가난한 동네로 이사하거나 더 낮은 질의 삶을 살지도 모릅니다. 그러나 저는 이 커뮤니티에 계속 살면서 변화를 이끌어 낼 것입니다. 진정으로 좋은 일자리란 이런 것입니다. 제가 이 행진에 참여하는 이유는 모든 사람들이 이러한 삶을 누릴 수 있게 하기 위함입니다.
I'm a deputy probation officer, and have been doing this for 20 years.
I like helping young people. As a probation officer, I work towards making a difference in their lives - one at a time – this is my favorite thing about my job. My message to them is to try to work on themselves to be a good productive neighbor. The thing about this work is that it cannot be done alone; it’s a team and community effort. I would like to see all of us working together and supporting this effort. I recently took a labor training class at UCLA and ran into a young man from the Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. He used to be on probation and report to me. He came up to me to remind me that I locked him up three times in juvenile detention facilities, and to thank me for what I did for him. I was happy to see him on a path to success.
I came from Korea when I was 10 years old and moved into an all Latino community. I adapted, learned the culture and the language, and became multilingual. I witnessed first hand the many obstacles facing immigrants in the mainstream workplace.
I’m marching for a better future for our next generation, for our kids and our community. I believe in making a difference and being involved in the community. I believe people deserve to be compensated properly; people need to get paid well for good work. It also comes down to respecting workers and what they do. The more middle class we have the more prosperous our communities will be.
Because of my job, I’m looking forward to being able to retire, and being able to continue my current level of living. Unlike someone who may have to move out of the area or survive on a lower standard of living, I will be able to stay in my home, in my community and continue making a difference. This is how a good job pays back.
