Got healthy?

masi-oka-got-milk-ad The Korean Resource Center hosted the 7th bi-annual Koreatown Health Day on October 6, at Olympic Presbyterian Church. Over 1250 units of services were provided to low-income, uninsured Korean American community members.

Thanks to over 120 volunteers who offered medical and interpretation services, each participant was given a comprehensive physical, which included basic blood test screenings – blood pressure, glucose and cholesterol levels, hepatitis B screenings, bone density screenings, vision tests, acupuncture, physician and dental consultations, mammograms and pap smears. In addition to the screenings, educational workshops regarding colon rectal cancer and the importance of good financial credit history were offered throughout the day.

While waiting for their appointments, volunteers encouraged community members to sign petitions for advocating for universal health care coverage and the California Dream Act.

Participating organizations included: Asian Pacific Liver Center at St. Vincent Medical Center, Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, Office of Women’s Health; Sanofi-Aventis; The Elizabeth Center; UCLA Asian American Network Cancer Awareness Research and Training (AANCART); UCLA Asian Pacific Health Corps; Young American Leaders Association.
