Wilshire Plaza Hotel Workers Toy Drive 12-13-07 Hope you could bring new toys to KRC by 12/17 (Mon), we might open till midnight, and if you are busy, you can also pledge any amounts….

About 100 workers at the Wilshire Plaza Hotel (formally known as the Raddison Hotel), located in the heart of Koreatown in Los Angeles City, have been facing extreme economic hardship over a year. The beginning of the 2007, the hotel owner cut workers’ wages from $10-14/hr to $7.55/hr. And since mid-2006, the workers’ health insurance and sick days were taken away, and their vacation time was reduced. One cook, who has been working at the hotel more than 16 years, had a reduced pay check from $15/hr to $7.55/hr.

The cut in wages has hurt the worker’s ability to provide for their families. Many workers now rely on church food banks for donated groceries in order to support their families during this time of need. And one of housekeepers, who is currently battling breast cancer, had to stop medical treatment after she lost her health insurance.

The hotel workers have been boycotting the hotel for many months and asking for community support to boycott the hotel.

For years, the Wilshire Plaza Hotel has been a popular venue for the local Korean community. The workers have served many community events such as wedding, children’s first birthday “Dol”, and organization banquet.

Now it is our turn to appreciate the workers’ hard works and pay respect their pick line. Also this holiday seasons, as a small token of our appreciation and solidarity, we would like to present new Toys to the children of the hotel workers. Thanks.
