My Identity

Kenny Lim
Summer 2008

At first I didn’t know who I was.
I thought I was Korean because both my parents were Korean
But I didn’t even speak the Korean language…
And I didn’t even know the Korean culture
So then I thought I was American since I was born here
But most of my friends weren’t even American, they were Korean and I didn’t really hang out with anyone else.
So after that, my mom sent me to the SYEP program.
And through all the activities and documentaries I went through (card says: “documentary”; “cesar Chavez”)
I realized something
I realized that I was Korean American
It didn’t matter that I didn’t know the Korean culture or the Korean language
I was proud that I was Korean American
And I hope that someday I’ll be able to help others like me
…and I don’t like kelp.
