캘 메디커텍트 시행 시기 변경에 대한 보도 의뢰건

(보도자료) 메디칼과 메디케어의 동시 수혜자들에 대한 통합 프로그램인 캘 메디커넥트의 시행 시기가 다시 3개월 늦춰져 2014년 4월 시행된다는 계획이다.

이에 따른 등록 기간의 변화는
시행 3개월 전: 메디칼과 메디케어 보험의 변화를 알리는 편지
시행 2개월 전: 선택 가능한 보험 플랜과 의사 목록과 신청서
시행 1개월 전:신청을 상기시키는 편지가 메디칼과 메디케어 동시 수혜자에게 발송될 것이다.

"시민권을 얻는 그날까지": 베이커스필드에서 수천 집회, 하원의회에 이민개혁안 표결 압력

(보도자료) 345대의 차량과 버스에 탑승한 1만명이 넘을 것으로 예상되는 수천 인파가 2013년 8월 14일 베이커스필드 연방 하원 공화당 윕(Whip)인 케빈 맥아르티 의원 사무실 앞에서 결집하고 이민개혁을 요구하는 차량 집회 및 행진을 벌였다. 이 집회에는 민족학교와 치를라, 캘리포니아 이민개혁연합, 농업노동자조합(UFW), 케른 카운티 이민개혁 연합 등 25개가 넘는 이민자권익, 노동자, 커뮤니티 및 종교계 단체들이 참여했다. 참가자들은 맥아르티 의원에게 늦어도 9월 30일까지는 이민개혁안이 표결에 부쳐지도록 지도력을 발휘 해 줄 것을 촉구했다.

민족학교의 윤희주 사무국장은 "우리가 만나는 수많은 이들은 이민개혁을 애타게 기다리고 있다. 하원 의회에서 이민개혁안을 계속 연기하도록 두고 볼 수 없다. 우리는 맥아르티 의원 겸 하원 윕(whip)에게 이민개혁안에 대한 즉각적인 결단을 요구한다. 수많은 지역 주민 및 미래의 시민권자들이 하원과 하원 지도부의 책임 있는 행보를 기대하고 있다." 라고 말했다.

안녕하십니까? 동포사회의 눈과 귀가 되어주시는 언론 관계자 여러분께 감사 드립니다. 민족학교 등 단체들의 청년들이 추진한 이민개혁 전국횡단 캠페인이 성공적으로 마무리되고 청년들은 각 지역 이민자 커뮤니티를 방문하고 학생들과 네트워크를 형성하고 이민개혁을 위한 분위기를 만드는데 일조했습니다. 이에 그 결과를 보고하기 위해 기자회견을 가지오니 취재를 부탁드립니다.

Dream Riders: Visiting Representative Olsen’s office, Last Day!

(Brandon Licuanan) This morning, I was yet again the last person in the room to wake up. Kevin stood beside my sofa bed already fully dressed in his blue dress shirt. I suddenly remembered that he had a 5:30 a.m. radio conference call that day. Although I wasn’t around to hear him speak, I have no doubt that he represented the Dream Riders well.

As I dressed for the day, it felt bittersweet; I miss everyone back home, but I loved being with the other Dream Riders. I would make this last day count.

"이민자 권익을 위한 여행은 계속된다": 전국횡단 캠페인 텍사스·루이지애나 방문

(보도자료) 이민개혁에 대해 전국 차원에서 커뮤니티의 목소리를 모으기 위해 8명의 청년들이 추진한 이민개혁 전국횡단 캠페인은 8월 4일부터 6일까지 루이지애나와 텍사스 활동을 끝으로 2주 대단원의 막을 내렸다.

청년들은 루이지애나 뉴올리언즈에서 베트남계 커뮤니티와 흑인 커뮤니티를 방문하고 지역 현안에 대해 배우고 연대 활동을 펼쳤다. 텍사스 휴스턴에서는 중국계 권익 단체인 OCA의 70명 회원들과 함께 설명회를 가지고 이민개혁 촉구 캠페인 참여를 부탁했으며, 8월 6일에는 휴스턴 한인회에서 한인 언론들과 기자회견을 가졌다. 아울러 휴스턴 한인회와 공동으로 피트 올슨 연방 하원 의원 (텍사스 22지구 - 공화) 사무실을 방문해 이민개혁 지지를 촉구했다. 올슨 의원의 보좌관은 한번도 서류미비자 청년을 만나본적이 없다며 놀라움을 표시했다.

안녕하십니까? 올해 여름에도 한인 사회에 정확한 소식을 전달하는 수고에 감사드립니다. 8명의 한인 및 아시안 아메리칸 청년들이 이민개혁에 대해 목소리를 내기 위해 펼치고 있는 “이민개혁 전국횡단 캠페인”이 시작되어 13일째에 접어들었습니다. 캠페인 참가자들은 한인 사회의 많은 지지를 받으며 캘리포니아, 워싱턴 DC, 조지아 주 등을 방문하며 커뮤니티와 만나 자신의 이야기를 나누고 지역 의원을 방문하고 있습니다. 캠페인 참가자들은 마지막으로 휴스턴 한인회 사무실에서 기자회견을 가집니다. 참석하셔서 이를 널리 알려주시기를 부탁드립니다.

Dream Riders: Houston, Texas

(Allen Tu) We arrived in Houston late in the afternoon after a long drive from New Orleans. In the car, we prepared for our last community meeting presentation. It was a community meeting and dinner with OCA-Greater Houston and BPSOS-Houston. More than 70 people came.

Kevin opened and introduced the Dream Riders and the campaign. A few of the Dream Riders shared their stories. I incorporated spoken word and call-and-response into my story. I felt incredibly good about the participation from the community members. After our presentations, we held an open dialogue with the community members. I even met a rapper, Rocko Steady, who was a finalist for Kollaboration Houston. I will be performing at Kollaboration Chicago.

Dream Riders: New Orleans

(Kevin Lee) We arrived in New Orleans, very late on the night of August 3. The next morning, we picked up Young Sun, one of the youth directors from the Korean American Resource and Cultural Center (KRCC) in Chicago and drove to the home of Vietnamese American Young Leaders Association (VAYLA). On the way, I looked out the window was surprised to see a nearby pond with crocodiles and people fishing. We were in a neighborhood with hard working families. At VAYLA, we were warmly welcomed by Ms. Christi, a VAYLA organizer and several VAYLA youth ranging from elementary age and up.

Dream Riders: Meeting Freedom University

(Anna Jung) On August 3rd, the Dream Riders had a community meeting with students and professors of Freedom University at the Athens Latino Center for Education and Services. Everyone was very welcoming and supportive of us and our campaign. In contrast to yesterday’s press conference luncheon, this meeting was more intimate, reminding us of our earlier meeting with SEAC and United For the Dream, when all present shared their stories.

(Dong Yoon Kim) I grew up in Georgia for most of my life. I always wanted to engage in community activism in Georgia, but was never sure. As a student at the University of Georgia, Athens, I became involved with student activism, but did not have the opportunity to do community activism specifically in my own Korean American community. Today, I got my chance to work in Georgia with our Dream Riders and address immigration issues that impact Korean American and AAPI communities.
